Horicon Marsh

Last month I took a day and visited Horicon Marsh. It is the largest fresh water cattail marsh in the United States. It is located about an hours drive northwest of Milwaukee.  The two pictures above show views of part of the marsh from the southern end. The southern part of the  marsh is a State Wildlife Area managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The northern part of the marsh is a National Wildlife Refuge manages by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

I started in the State Wildlife Area. On my hike into the marsh I saw quite a few red winged black birds. Below are a couple of photos I took of them.

As I walked farther into the marsh I saw more birds as well as rabbets and an interesting insect on some nice pink flowers. Below are photos of some of these things.


I then walked back to my car and drove to the part of the marsh that is a National Wildlife Refuge. Below are a couple of pictures I took there.
